Downtown Austin Neighborhood Guide

The urban heart of Austin for those who want the full-city experience.

Walkable · Central · Bustling · Urban

Austin may be known as a space for nature lovers and folks looking to escape the big city vibes of places like New York or Los Angeles, but the Lone Star capital simultaneously provides a sleek, urban atmosphere as well. Nowhere does this quality become more evident than in Downtown Austin, both the cultural center of the city and its literal, physical center.

People who love to live in high-rises with instant access to walkable coffee shops, the best restaurants in town, and classy cocktail bars will thrive here. The skyline changes on a monthly basis due to the booming population size associated with big-time cities (although, considering the size of Austin, those Downtown apartments become even more rare and coveted).

Since this is Texas, this cityscape comes with a twist when you live Downtown — you’re never too far from the scenic, natural beauty of Lady Bird Lake, which serves as the southern border for this neighborhood.

Neighborhood Vibe

As mentioned above, Downtown Austin is the most traditionally urban area in the city, and its residents only further support that statement. On the weekend, you can find them sipping bottomless mimosas at brunch, heading off to a spin class in matching workout sets, or browsing the boutiques with iced latte in hand. Nature is never too far away either — Zilker Park sits only minutes down the road — but with skyscrapers darting from the top of every sidewalk block, it can also feel a world apart from the green space that covers so much of the rest of Austin.

Our Favorite Spots

From shopping to eating to drinking, enticing businesses decorate every corner of Downtown Austin. One of our favorites is The Roosevelt Room, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar that lists their drinks based on the era in which they were created — the Clover Clubs, originally famous during the day of Prohibition, are a must-try. Afterward, you can grab a bite at Wu Chow, a high-end Chinese fusion restaurant known to serve the best soup dumplings in the whole city. The famous landmarks, like the Moody Theater and the Capital, also make Downtown Austin an essential stop when friends and family come to visit.

Things to know

When people think of Austin, they usually conjure up an image of Downtown. And, with popular attractions like the Capital and cultural stand-outs like the Paramount Theater, you can bet that parking is a constant struggle. For those looking to move Downtown, it would be best to make sure your apartment has a parking garage, or to invest in a bike if you’re more inclined toward a green-energy mode of transportation. Also, know that this area only works for residents dead-set on an apartment. There are few to no houses for residential lease or sale in Downtown.
