Transportation Building, Chicago: A Landmark of Historic Charm and Modern Living

Overview of Transportation Building in Chicago

The Transportation Building is a distinguished residential high-rise located at 600 S. Dearborn Street, situated in Chicago’s near south side, within the historic Printers Row neighborhood. This 22-story building originally constructed in 1911 was once home to multiple printing companies but has since been transformed into a luxury condominium community featuring loft-style residences that blend urban conveniences with a glimpse into Chicago’s rich architectural past.

Architectural and Historical Significance

The Transportation Building stands as the tallest structure in Printers Row and offers an exclusive connection to Chicago history. Notably, the original Transportation Building was an iconic exhibit at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, designed by Adler & Sullivan in a distinctive architectural style that contrasted with the rest of the exposition’s “White City.” While the current building is a later structure, it carries forward the legacy of transportation innovation and architectural interest rooted deeply in the city’s past.

Apartment Features and Floor Plans

With 294 loft-style units, the Transportation Building provides a variety of floor plans designed to meet different lifestyle needs. Units commonly feature high ceilings, hardwood floors, and kitchens outfitted with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The residences are spacious, with average unit sizes around 965 square feet, and charmed by modern updates including central air conditioning and in-unit laundry facilities.

Modern Amenities and Services

Residents enjoy a comprehensive array of building amenities geared toward urban comfort and luxury. The building is staffed with a 24-hour doorperson, on-site management and engineering services, a fitness center, secured bike storage, and an exercise room. There are on-site dry cleaners and valet services, adding to the convenience and seamless lifestyle the building offers. Additionally, features such as controlled access, elevators, and laundry facilities enhance day-to-day comfort.

Prime Location and Neighborhood Life

Located in the South Loop area of Chicago, the Transportation Building offers residents easy access to an array of dining and entertainment destinations including popular local spots like Amarit Thai and Sushi, Sofi, Potbelly’s, and Gino’s East. The building is conveniently positioned just a block and a half from the Harrison Red Line station, providing effortless access to public transportation for citywide commuting.

Neighboring communities such as Printer’s Row, Dearborn Park, and the Chicago Loop further enrich the residential experience with a blend of historic charm and urban vitality.

Schools and Services Nearby

The Transportation Building falls within the Chicago Public Schools attendance zone, including South Loop Elementary School and Jones College Prep High School, supporting families seeking proximity to quality education.

Generally pretty good. The neighborhood is a mix of different kinds of people. The building is nice, with good doormen that know all of the residents, a gym that is small but adequate, and pretty good on-site laundry facilities. It lacks some of the amenities of newer buildings, but is also reasonably priced for being very close to the Loop.

The building has few amenities besides a door person, but also reasonable assessment fees, which I gladly accept. The other tenants generally keep to themselves, so don't expect a welcome basket from your floor. Overall it's a great building if what I've described is what you're looking for.
What did you like most?
Low-frills, low assessment fees. The door person is my primary need for a building. I'll pay for my own gym membership and do my laundry in my own unit.
What did you like least?
The retail occupants include three restaurants, two of which have obscenely obstructive sidewalk seating in the summer. There are also a lot of college students in the area (although not many of whom live in the building) so the neighborhood can be a little irritating on weekend nights.

Location & Neighborhood

Printer's Row

Printer’s Row is located just south of The Loop and is close to the Chicago River. Its name came from the many buildings in the area that were used by publishing businesses in the late 1880s. You will find a mix of housing options here, from converted residential lofts to new high rises, making it the perfect neighborhood mix.

If you’re planning on living in Printer’s Row, expect tree-lined streets, historical, red brick buildings and a friendly neighborhood vibe. You’ll be a short walk away from major train lines and busses for a short and easy commute. Sitting in between The Loop and South Loop, expect a quieter oasis in the heart of Chicago. You’ll see friendly faces and small, neighborhood shops that will make you forget you’re in the middle of downtown Chicago.
