River East Center: A Premier Residential Skyscraper in Chicago
Located in the vibrant Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, the River East Center stands as one of the most notable residential skyscrapers in the city. Towering at 644 feet (196 meters) with 58 floors, it is the third tallest all-residential building in Chicago, offering sweeping views of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.
Architectural and Residential Features
Completed in 2001 and designed by DeStefano + Partners, River East Center is composed of 620 condominium units that blend luxury and city living. The design originally included rooftop spires that would have enhanced its skyline presence, underscoring its architectural significance.
The building shares its base with the nearby Embassy Suites Lakefront hotel, creating an integrated complex that features not only residences but also retail and entertainment amenities. Among these is an AMC Theatre boasting 21 screens—Chicago’s largest cinema facility—a unique convenience for residents and visitors alike.
Amenities and Lifestyle
Residents of River East Center enjoy premium amenities that enrich everyday living. The building offers 24/7 doorman service, a fully equipped fitness center, a sundeck with panoramic views, and a club room designed for social gatherings.
The lobby and common areas emphasize convenience and security, while the location provides easy access to nearby essentials and recreation. Along the Chicago Riverwalk, residents can partake in scenic walks, and within walking distance are major attractions such as Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile shopping, the Lakefront Trail, and Ohio Street Beach.
Neighborhood and Accessibility
Strategically positioned at 512 N. McClurg Court, River East Center is situated in a lively urban setting with excellent transit options. Multiple CTA bus lines pass nearby, supplemented by Divvy bike-share stations, encouraging eco-friendly commuting. The proximity to grocery stores like Whole Foods and Target, along with numerous restaurants and cultural venues, makes this location highly desirable.
Furthermore, residents have convenient access to medical and educational institutions, including the University of Chicago Medical Center located within the complex, and prestigious schools such as Northwestern’s Feinberg and Kellogg Schools and Lurie Children’s Hospital.
Living Experience at River East Center
The residences offer spacious units with abundant natural light and striking city and water views. Hardwood flooring is common, and the master suites typically include ensuite bathrooms and walk-in closets. The combination of luxury finishes and a well-designed floor plan ensures a comfortable and upscale living environment.
While pets are not permitted in the River East Center building, the complex’s integration with retail, dining, and entertainment venues creates a dynamic lifestyle atmosphere where residents can enjoy an urban experience without leaving the building.

Frequently Asked Questions
Location & Neighborhood
Streeterville

Streeterville is a lively neighborhood on the shores of Lake Michigan. It combines tourism, residential living, and culture, unlike any other Chicago neighborhood. Every day, thousands of tourists flock to Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, and the Museum of Contemporary Art to experience some of Chicago’s most iconic attractions. Northwestern’s Chicago campus and Memorial Hospital contribute to Streeterville’s cultural presence.
Residents typically live in high-rise condos or multi-unit apartments where they can enjoy beautiful lake views and easy access to nearby dining and nightlife options. With many lush parks in the neighborhood and Gold Coast to the North, residents have ample space to take dogs for weekend walks.
Commuting via Lake Shore Drive is supremely convenient for Streeterville residents as long as you have a car or can walk to the red line or Michigan Ave buses. Depending on your location within the neighborhood, access to other highways, public transportation, and The Loop can be limited. If you'd like to have easier access to the Loop, check out New East Side.
Streeterville is home to some of Chicago’s best restaurants, bars, and clubs. Although there are plenty of nightlife options, Streeterville is not considered the nightlife capital of Chicago. People often head to other neighborhoods to take part in a more lively nightlife scene.
