I live in semi-basement unit. My first winter here it was FREEZING cold in my unit (the heat is not tenant controlled). I told the landlord and he offered that I could move into one of his other nearby apartments with vacancy for the same rent price (the other apt was a more expensive one) OR that he could install electric heaters in my current apartment and change out the windows. I opted for the 2nd option. Later, I noticed that my electric bill was much higher (from the electric heating costs). I told the landlord and he agreed to pay half of the bills for the winter. I still need to write the Yelp review. Hayes Properties is a GREAT company to rent from.
What did you like most?
I love the neighborhood and prime location! Parking is good and the area is not congested, many transportation options, less than 10 minutes drive to the lake, good mix of families and singles, a good escape from city hustle and bustle yet with the amenities of city living. Within 1-block I have a convenience store, gas station, train station, several restaurants, cafe. Within four blocks I have a post office, more restaurants, salons, gym, doctors offices, bank, neighborhood stores, etc. Within 6 blocks I have a theater, music school, Mariano's grocery and other groceries, Sears department store, Metra train station, library, more gyms, parks, and just about everything I need.
What did you like least?
In my apt unit I have exposed overhead pipes (not the aesthetically looking types) and have had problems with many insect bites during the summer. Function of it being a basement apt.
