I own the building, and it's a small two flat. It's all the headaches of owning a home with half the space while also dealing with tenants, but on the flip side of the coin you've got someone else paying the vast majority of your mortgage. The neighborhood's on the brink of improving. This street is the nicest in the area, mostly because we have a decent number of current or retired cops. Down at the ends of the block, we have a couple bigger multi-unit buildings, one of which is on the brink of being condemned and/or foreclosed on, but I don't see many gang members unless I drive down the street to the gym and there's very little graffiti.

What did you like most?

I have same amount of space I'd have if I rented, but for a tiny fraction of the cost. Also, since I own the property, I'm gaining value with every mortgage payment, whereas rent money would be money I'd never see again. Another big advantage is the ability to control my home rather than dealing with crazy management. Sometimes it's the little things, like painting the walls. The real advantage is that once the house is paid for, I'll have income for the rest of my life as long as I have tenants in it.

What did you like least?

The disadvantage of going for a multi-family home over an apartment is that you're the guy. There's nobody but you keeping up on the maintenance and dealing with tenants' problems. However, maintaining a house isn't rocket science, and dealing with tenants isn't particularly harder than dealing with neighbors in any apartment.
