400 East Randolph: Iconic High-Rise Living in Chicago’s New Eastside

A Landmark in Chicago’s Skyline and Residential History

400 East Randolph, originally known as Outer Drive East, is a towering 40-story high-rise condominium located in the vibrant New Eastside neighborhood of downtown Chicago. Completed in 1963 and designed by renowned architectural firms Hirschfeld, Pawlan, & Reinheimer and Reinheimer & Associates, this building was among the largest apartment complexes outside New York City at the time of its opening. Today, it houses 944 condominium units providing striking views of Lake Michigan, Millennium Park, Lakeshore East Park, and the Chicago skyline.

The building’s conception was ambitious, developed by Jerrold Wexler and supported by Mayor Richard J. Daley, who sought to retain upscale residents within the city’s core rather than lose them to the suburbs. This resulted in legal and engineering innovations, such as extending Randolph Drive into the lake area, enabling the construction of the complex directly on the lakefront while adhering to city protections for this valuable area.

Expansive Amenities Tailored for Urban Comfort

Residents of 400 East Randolph enjoy a wide array of amenities designed to complement city living with luxury and convenience. The building features a fully renovated fitness center and spa on the 7th floor equipped with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, racquetball and basketball courts, a heated pool and hot tub, saunas, steam rooms, locker facilities, and even relaxation areas such as a sun deck and winter garden. There are also communal spaces including a hospitality room with full kitchen facilities, a library, and a restaurant and bar onsite.

Additional amenities include indoor parking with multiple resident and guest options, bike storage, laundry facilities, business center, media center/movie theater, package receiving services, and 24-hour security providing peace of mind. The building also hosts a children’s play area as well as service facilities like a dry cleaner and a hair salon.

Thoughtfully Designed Residences with Panoramic Views

Units in 400 East Randolph range from studios to two-bedroom condominiums, with interiors that boast custom millwork, hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, and chef’s kitchens equipped with modern appliances and large islands. Many residences include crown molding and California closets for enhanced storage and aesthetics.

One of the most attractive features of these units is the expansive views they offer. Many homes include balconies that look out over the lake, parks, and cityscape, providing an exceptional urban living experience that blends nature and architecture. Recent renovations of select units have elevated the living style further with open layouts, tiered ceilings, custom closets, and updated kitchens with breakfast bars.

Prime Location in Chicago’s New Eastside Neighboring Iconic Parks

Situated on East Randolph Street, 400 East Randolph enjoys a prime location between the Buckingham and Harbor Point buildings. It is flanked by two expansive green spaces — Millennium Park to the south and Lakeshore East Park to the north — offering easy access to outdoor leisure and cultural events . The proximity to the Loop business district makes it ideal for professionals who desire walkability, with countless office buildings, theaters, shopping venues, and fine dining spots all within reach.

This dynamic neighborhood continues to thrive as one of Chicago’s most distinguished areas for both living and working, blending the vibrancy of an urban core with lakefront tranquility.

400 East Randolph remains an iconic example of Chicago’s commitment to sophisticated lakefront living, combining architectural heritage, extensive amenities, and an unbeatable location in the heart of the city’s New Eastside community.

Great area, walk to work in the loop every day, management is a pain in the ass to deal with and arbitrarily enforces rules they consider important. Not very intelligent and mostly unhelpful.
What did you like most?
Most of the door men and engineers on staff were very friendly. Walking to work in the loop (or the free shuttle during the winter months) was always nice.
What did you like least?
Management company.
