A lot of college graduates moving to large cities from top tier universities are tricked by unconscious preconceptions of class, wealth, and lifestyle into believing that the only places appropriate and safe enough to live in are large buildings that cost a fortune and provide all the same services as their college campus did. There is nothing wrong with choosing this lifestyle, but it is not necessary and many of these same people who would choose something familiar and comfortable simply because their friends have done so may also find a more frugal, enriching, and liberating lifestyle by taking the road less traveled. I live in a spacious, beautiful, superbly functional duplex in Avondale with laundry in building. My previous downstairs neighbors were a delightful hispanic family of 6. My new landlord just moved in with his wife downstairs. My neighborhood is safe, cheap as hell (my roommate and I can afford a third bedroom for our recording studio), and full of fascinating Polish and Mexican culture. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the city.
