Neartown-Montrose and Washington Avenue Coalition/Memorial Park

Electric fun abounds in the Montrose-Museum District Community, consisting of a few neighborhoods located just west of Downtown Houston. Its artistic vibes, which include some of Texas’ most famous art museums and monuments, as well as its history of inclusiveness, mean creativity and culture appear on the corner of every block. More specifically, Monroe and Neartown form the hipster hearts of the city, with numerous vintage stores, dive bars, and tattoo shops. Then, there’s the Museum District, every amateur Picasso’s dream, with major attractions that include the 17,000 plus pieces to view in the Menil Collection, as well as the Rothko Chapel and the Museum of Fine Arts. Plus, with its mix of nightlife and green space, young professionals flock to the apartment buildings lining the Washington Avenue Coalition/Memorial Park section of this area.

Neighborhood Vibe

On the weekends, the population of the Montrose-Museum District Community may not hit the streets until around noon, but that just gives them more energy to party into the wee hours of Saturday night. Once they wake up, though, they can be found browsing the racks for single-stitch tees at thrift stores like Leopard Lounge, or packing a picnic to enjoy while watching the sand volleyball games in Eleanor Tinsley Park.

When it comes to housing in this area, you can expect to see lodging primarily in the forms of townhouse and condo developments from the 1990s, or older historical mansions in colonial revival or Italianate styles. Plenty of luxury apartments also pop up in this community.

Our Favorite Spots

A day in this neighborhood should start off with breakfast at La Guadalupana, a beloved Mexican bakery where the conchas are as big as the vibes. Then, when the sun sets, everyone hits up the local favorite bar Poison Girl for a round of Lone Stars, pinball, and photo booth pics. After you drink your fill, you can groove out to a live show at legendary music meccas Anderson Fair and Numbers. And, when it comes to lip-syncing for your life, you simply must catch a Sunday drag brunch at top-notch queen hangout Bar Boheme.

Things to Know

The Montrose-Museum District Community is one of the most walkable areas in Houston, which means that you don’t need to worry about a car or Ubering home from one of the many bars in this nightlife hot spot. If you want to go entirely car-free, the METRORail lines and the 56 Airline / Montrose METRO bus routes connect the area to other spots within the city.

Great service, takes the stress out of apartment searching. This is actually my second time using Aptamigo in Denver. Worked with Bralie who was amazing. She was super communicative, candid, helpful, and definitely knew a lot about the market and buildings before touring. You pretty much just have a conversation on what you're looking for and they take care of the rest. Thanks for the help!

Great experience with Bobby. I contacted him literally only a day before flying out to Austin, and he was able to set up appointments for me the very next day. He picked me up and drove me around to the different places, and when I suddenly found out I'd have another roommate, he worked with me to pivot into finding 2/2's instead of 1/1's. He talked to each of the leasing…

AptAmigo's apartment locator service was an absolute LIFESAVER for my partner and I!! Aptamigo offered to connect me with an expert for free and I didn't think it would be legit. Julia emailed me that night offering to set up a call the next day, I was concerned about how much it would cost me and she assured me it would all be completely free. So she called me the next day and…

Wow! What a time saver! Had a short time to find apartment and after an introduction call, where we discussed my needs/wants, Liz sent me over a list of potential apartments. She then set up all the appointments as I was flying in for 2 days to view. She found places that fit my budget and desires and selected the second apartment viewed as it was perfect! I cannot rave enough…

I was planning to move from out of state to Chicago and Vanessa at AptAmigo quickly reached out and provided some recommendations. The website was easy to use to learn about different locations and see reviews. Vanessa was always ready to help and acted fast when I made a decision. I’m not sure how she had so much time in her day, but I would highly recommend signing up if you are moving.

My roommate and I were struggling with finding the right apartment that met all of our ends (price, move-in date, location) and I reached out to AptAmigo for help. Bobby helped us find an apartment within a few hours and we were able to apply and sign the lease within a few days. He was so helpful and answered all my questions that I had. Definitely recommend! (and its free)

I had been looking at apartments in Chicago for months and had no luck finding anything. Then my friend told me that Apt. Amigo really helped her and she referred me to Kristin. It was such a pleasure working with her, she made it such an easy process and I ended up finding an apartment I really liked! Thanks Kristin :)
